Anti-histamine

Indications

For the treatment of perennial rhinitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children aged 6 years and over, and for seasonal rhinitis (hay fever) in children aged between 2 to 5 years.

Chemical Composition

Each 5 ml contains Cetirizine Dihydrochloride BP 5 mg

Dosage & Administration

Children aged from 6 to 12 years: 5 mg twice daily (5 ml oral solution bid (a full spoon twice daily). Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age: 10 mg once daily (10 ml oral solution (2 full spoons)).

Contraindications

Cetirizine is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to cetirizine, to any constituent of the product, to hydroxyzine or to any piperazine derivatives. Cetirizine is also contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment at less than 10 ml/min creatinine clearance. Cetirizine has been reported to be excreted in human breast milk. Due to lack of evidence of safety, cetirizine is therefore contra-indicated in lactating women.

Side Effects

Fatigue, dizziness and headache. In some cases, paradoxical CNS stimulation, Micturition difficulty, eye accommodation disorders and dry mouth has been reported. Isolated cases of micturition difficulty, eye accommodation disorders and dry mouth have been reported.

Drug Interaction

Theophylline decreases the clearance of cetirizine although the disposition of theophylline is not affected. In common with other antihistamines it is recommended that excessive alcohol consumption be avoided. Concurrent use of cetirizine with other CNS depressants should also be avoided as reduction in alertness and impairment of performance may occur.
